How to Stay Safe in the Workplace

May 4, 2022 by Big Leap

While it is largely your employer’s responsibility to keep you safe while at work, there are still steps you can take to ensure your own safety. Taking these measures can help you prevent accidents or injuries in order to keep you and your coworkers safe.

Keep Your Workspace Clean

No matter what type of job you have, you want to make sure your work area is clean. When it’s messy or things are disorganized, there’s a higher chance of accidents occurring. Keep your area organized. If everything has a designated place, it’s easier to keep things from becoming a mess or a problem. If you spill anything, clean it up immediately. Failing to clean up spills quickly leads to more slips and falls. Throughout the day, find ways to clear your workspace. You want to make sure you have a clear walkway and an organized area.

Report Any Hazards

Many accidents and injuries can occur simply because people aren’t aware of hazards. If you find any kind of hazard in your workplace, you need to report it immediately. When hazards are reported, they can be addressed in the proper fashion including putting up signs, sectioning off an area, or finding ways to remove the hazard. When you report hazards in the workplace, you make the area safe for you and all of your coworkers. To further ensure a safe work environment, encourage fellow employees to report any hazards they may find.

Participate in Safety Trainings

Your workplace should be providing you with safety trainings. Often, these occur when you are first hired, but they may also take place periodically throughout your employment. Trainings exist to inform employees of the hazards in the workplace, how to avoid or deal with them, and what protocols to follow to stay safe. Keep in mind that some protocols can change over time and there might be updates at each training. For your own safety, make sure you attend these trainings and pay attention to what is taught. This can better prepare you to handle any hazards you may face and you can reduce your risk of injury.

Staying safe at work is not always a guarantee. Your actions, and the actions of your employer, can make a major difference in whether or not accidents or injuries occur. Even when you do all you can, they may still take place and fortunately you are protected in the form of workers’ compensation.

How to Avoid Being Bitten by Someone’s Dog

January 19, 2022 by Big Leap

Many people own dogs, but not all of them will properly train their dogs. In these instances, it is more likely for their dog to bite someone including you. While it is their responsibility to train their dog, there are behaviors you can take to avoid being bitten.

Be Mindful of Your Body Language

When you are around a dog you are unfamiliar with, you can avoid being bitten by being mindful of your body language. It is important that you make an effort to relax your body. You can also soften your expression and don’t maintain direct eye contact. This behavior can be intimidating to dogs. A dog may also become threatened if you approach them head on or lean over them. Instead, turn your body to the side to appear less threatening and crouch down to their level. The way you act around a dog can have a major impact on their reaction to you, so you should make an effort to appear calm and non-threatening.

Know the Signs of Aggressive Behavior

You can also avoid being bitten if you can identify aggressive behavior in dogs. Recognizing this behavior can help you know when you should walk away or leave a dog alone. There are several types of body language you can observe in a dog that indicate aggressive behavior. In the face, they will likely wrinkle their muzzle, tighten their muscles, or show their teeth while growling. The rest of their body may become stiff or rigid. Their tail may also be held straight up and the hair on their back wil stand up. Dogs that exhibit aggressive behavior may also stare directly ahead. If you recognize any of this behavior, you should give the dog some space and not irritate it further.

Don’t Antagonize the Dog

While many dog bites can result from a lack of training, there are also many dog bites that are caused by the behavior of the person who is bitten. If you antagonize a dog and it bites you, then you can’t exactly hold the owner responsible. You should never tease or startle a dog. Don’t bother it while it’s eating or sleeping. Don’t chase a dog and don’t get between a dog and its owner. Be respectful of the dog and this can help you avoid any injury.

In a dog bite case, it can be difficult to determine the party at fault. For your benefit, you should make it a habit to avoid being the cause of a dog bite. Your actions can help you to stay safe and avoid being at fault in the event you are bitten.

Contacting a personal injury lawyer can help you in your dog bite case.

Negligence That Leads to Garage Door Injuries

January 5, 2022 by Big Leap

Garage doors are a staple in many homes. Even though they are quite common, there are many instances that can lead to injury. Unfortunately, many injuries are due to negligence. Being aware of these instances can help you avoid future injuries or pinpoint who is at fault for existing injuries.

Improper Installation

The problem with garage doors can start as early as their installation. These doors have many moving parts and they need to be installed properly. If they are not installed correctly, then they are more likely to malfunction and cause serious injury or even death. When garage doors are being installed, the homeowner/landlord needs to ensure they hire someone qualified to install the new doors. It can also be beneficial to have the doors inspected after they are installed to make sure they were installed properly. If an injury occurs because the doors were not installed correctly, then the company responsible for installing the doors can be held liable.

Failure to Have an Inspection

A great deal of injuries and other issues can be avoided through the simple act of having an inspection done. An inspection allows you to identify risks of potential issues and you can address them before they become major problems. If your home is ever inspected, the garage door needs to be included in that inspection. Failing to have it inspected, can result in problems going unidentified and they may not be addressed until an injury has occurred. Many homes are inspected when a new tenant moves into the property. You may also have an inspection if other problems occur around the home. Instead of just having one area inspected at a time, you may find it beneficial to have the entire property inspected in order to reduce avoidable injuries.

Refusal to Fix Issues

Unfortunately, some landlords may deliberately choose not to fix existing problems. They may be motivated by saving money, time, etc. This type of negligence can be very dangerous. Your landlord is responsible for everything in your home and they are required to make sure it is a safe living environment. If they refuse to fix issues, then they are liable for any injuries you sustain.

Garage door injuries can be very painful and may even result in death. Many of these injuries are avoidable and are often due to negligence of someone else. It can be beneficial to you to understand what situations may result in injuries you are not at fault for.

If you have been injured in a garage door accident that was the result of someone else’s negligence, then contact an attorney today.

Why Should I Get a Personal Injury Lawyer?

August 8, 2019 by Erik

If you have sustained an injury from an accident that was caused by the careless actions of someone else, you may need advice on how to proceed. You probably have a lot of questions regarding medical bills, dealing with insurance companies, or about lost income from missed days at work. Hiring a lawyer from the very beginning of the process is the best plan of action and will ensure that you have an experienced professional who can get the results you are looking for.

Why Get a Personal Injury Lawyer?

You are not required by law to hire a lawyer to handle your affairs. If you wish to represent yourself in court, it is an option, but truthfully, there is a good chance the results will be much different. A personal injury lawyer works with cases like yours on a regular basis and is familiar with the process.

Benefits of Hiring a Lawyer

When you think about why to get a personal injury lawyer, consider it a way to make the teams even in a match with an opponent. The insurance companies you are fighting against have hired their own lawyers and experts to find every possible reason to avoid paying you a settlement. Their job is to beat you. And they’re good at it.

However, if you have a personal injury lawyer, you also have a professional on your team who knows how to play the game well—and win. They know what tactics your opponent uses and how to respond appropriately, and they have earned the respect of those in the courtroom. Your chances of obtaining a fair settlement increase tremendously with a personal injury lawyer.

Another important benefit is that personal injury lawyers have a team of support staff who will also help with your case. They can recreate the accident and gather information that provides your lawyer with the details needed to win in court.

What Does a Personal Injury Lawyer Do?

In addition to listening to you and advising you on how to proceed, a personal injury lawyer can help:

  • Calculate and keep records of losses
  • Make sure all forms and paperwork are completed and filed correctly
  • Gather evidence
  • Interview witnesses
  • Handle negotiations
