Road Crusader: 4 Safety Tips For Motorcycle Riders

September 20, 2017 by Erik

There’s no denying the unique thrill that comes from riding a motorcycle. However, there’s also no denying the added risk on the road. As a motorcyclist, you are 30 times more likely than a car driver to suffer a fatal accident. That risk continues to increase with age.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ride, but it does mean you must commit to safe riding practices.

Choose Anti-lock Brakes

No rider is better than anti-lock brakes. While bikes with anti-lock brakes might cost a little more, it’s well worth the added safety.

It’s easy for a driver to lock up the brakes in a tense situation, which takes away your ability to steer. Anti-lock brakes allow you to maintain control of the bike during an emergency stop and/or slippery conditions.

Wear the Appropriate Gear

Perhaps the most important safety decision a rider can make is the decision to wear a helmet. Studies have shown that helmets save lives. In fact, without a helmet, a rider is 40 percent more likely to sustain a fatal head injury in an accident.

Make sure you have the proper apparel when riding. Invest in a leather or reinforced jacket. Always wear full pants and close-toed shoes that extend over the ankle.

Pick the Right Bike

Don’t buy more bike than you can handle. Large bikes are heavy and hard for a beginner to maneuver. Powerful engines require riders with proper knowledge and experience.

This extends to riders who haven’t been on a bike in many years. Today’s bikes are different, and often more powerful than what you may remember.

Stay on the Defense

In motorcycle-vehicle accidents, 60 percent of the time, car drivers are at fault. However, to put it bluntly, fault won’t matter to you if you die or are severely injured. It’s much better to be defensive.

Always maintain a safe following distance. This offers you two advantages:

  1. You have more time to stop.
  2. You’ll have more time to react to obstacles in the road.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming a driver can see you. Remember, there are a lot more blind spots in a car than on a bike.

While it’s important to know and practice safe riding techniques, even the most careful and experienced riders can find themselves in trouble. If you or your loved one has been involved in an accident, contact us for a free case consultation.
